Now that Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa have received record breaking extensions, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is the last notable quarterback seeking a new deal.
The conundrum the Cowboys face with giving Prescott a new deal is that they have also need to give new, higher paying contracts to wide receiver Cedee Lamb and linebacker Micah Parsons. To further complicate matters Prescott reportedly wants to become the highest paid quarterback with an average salary of $60 million per year according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
The lack of progress on Prescott’s new contract is eerily like the Minnesota Vikings situation last year with former quarterback Kirk Cousins. After not being able to agree to a new deal last year, Cousins left in free agency. The lack of a new deal will only lead to more speculation on Prescott's future in Dallas. If Prescott were to leave Dallas, the Seattle Seahawks are an ideal team for him to go to.
It’s no secret that the Seahawks have been interested in getting an upgrade to replace Geno Smith at the quarterback position. They traded for Sam Howell earlier in the year and wanted to draft Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in this year's draft. Getting Prescott would give them that desired upgrade and he would be the most accomplished quarterback they have had since trading Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos in 2022.
Last season Prescott delivered what is arguably his best season to date as he threw for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and only had 9 interceptions. His fit in Seattle's new look offense under offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb would be intriguing. At Washington Grubbs offensive scheme was pass heavy, particularly with deep throws down the field.
Prescott is known for his deep balls throws and pairing that with the likes of DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba at wide receiver is downright terrifying. Prescott also excelled in attacking the middle of the field with tight end Jake Ferguson. In Seattle he would have Noah Fant who has a similar build to Ferguson.
Having a consistent run game with Kenneth Walker would also be an upgrade for Prescott as he hasn’t had a true game changer at running back since the early years of Ezekiel Elliott’s career. While Prescott would be an upgrade, he does come with some warts to his game.
For as good as he’s been in the regular season, his past playoffs performances have been extremely underwhelming. He has made lots of careless turnovers and when the game has been on the line in tight one possession games, he hasn’t been able to deliver. Prescott record is 2-5 in the playoffs and he hasn’t made it past the Divisional round.
The Seahawks can live with his shortcomings given their current quarterback room is not exactly inspiring by any means. Seattle is in the same spot the Falcons were in last year before they landed Kirk Cousins. They have a good, well-balanced team that lacks a high-end quarterback to helm it. Their record in the last two seasons is 18-16, which clearly shows they are a quarterback away from being a legit contender in the NFC.
The only thing that would stand in the way of Prescott coming to the Pacific Northwest is his desired salary. Most teams probably won’t love the idea of shelling out $60 million annually to him and the Seahawks are even less likely to want to. Under general manager John Schneider they have been prudent at times, only willing to spend a certain amount on talented players.
This is part of the reason Seattle moved on from Wilson as his contract constrained the team's ability to flesh out the rest of the roster. With that said the Seahawks have more talent across the board now than they did back in 2022. Seattle appears desperate for a big shakeup at quarterback though, so they would probably bite the bullet and give Prescott his lucrative contract. It remains to be seen if Prescott will make it to free agency next year, but if he does the Seahawks are a team to watch in stealing him away from the Cowboys.
