Last week, the New York Jets officially signed veteran quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract. This was huge news for the NFL free agency landscape, as Fields was one of the only young quarterbacks available on the open market.
With future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers on his way out of New York, Fields figures to be the team’s starter for at least the 2025 NFL season and maybe beyond. This leaves a lot of questions to be answered for fantasy football regarding Fields’ ceiling and floor as a fantasy quarterback. We’ve seen a rollercoaster career from Justin Fields up to this point, but it seems that he will finally get another chance to become a long-term starting quarterback.
Today, we’ll be exploring exactly what that means for fantasy managers heading into the 2025 fantasy football season. Stick around as we dive into the fantasy outlooks for Justin Fields and the rest of the Jets offense!
Justin Fields: 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook
It’s finally happening. Justin Fields is a starter once again. The 26-year-old quarterback will get another shot at fantasy stardom after a solid season with Pittsburgh in relief of veteran Russell Wilson.
If you’ve forgotten, Justin Fields was an unstoppable force in fantasy football during the 2022 NFL season, compiling 1,143 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. These numbers on the ground are truly unbelievable for a quarterback, especially considering the fact that Fields had pretty underwhelming passing statistics.
Nonetheless, Fields’ fantasy upside is clearly marked by his ability as a runner. In his six games as a starter in 2024, he logged 55 carries for 231 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Even in limited action, Fields displayed that he is still a viable fantasy quarterback. On top of this, he posted the best touchdown-to-interception ratio of his career, with a count of 5:1.
Even in this small sample size, Fields flashed as a passer. If he can continue to improve in that area, his ceiling will only get higher. That’s good news for a player who is already startable just based on his rushing upside at the quarterback position alone.
All of this leads me to believe that there is a definite path for Justin Fields to finish as a top-10 fantasy quarterback in 2025. With a solid offensive line, a clear top wideout, and a pass-catching running back to work with, the veteran quarterback could be in for a career year.
Supporting Cast
It’s always fun to see college teammates team up in the NFL. This is the case for Justin Fields and star wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who played together at Ohio State. Wilson has managed to put up 1,000+ receiving yards in every season of his career despite New York’s shaky quarterback situation throughout his tenure as a Jet. A familiar face at the quarterback position might be the key to unlocking Wilson’s full potential.
Despite this reunion, I don’t think Wilson has a strong 2025 fantasy outlook. While Fields is a capable runner, I think he’s an obvious downgrade as a passer from Aaron Rodgers. While I could be proven wrong, I think that Wilson will be helping Fields more than Fields will be helping Wilson in fantasy football.
The presence of an effective number-one wide receiver, especially one with whom Fields is familiar, should make the transition easier for New York’s newest signal-caller.
Running back Breece Hall is another weapon in this offense who can help Fields reach his full fantasy potential. Hall has been used in the passing game a lot over the past few seasons, posting 591 receiving yards in 2023 and 483 in 2024, and I don’t expect that involvement to change with new head coach Aaron Glenn in charge.
Having a capable receiver out of the backfield will be a huge boost for Justin Fields and new Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, who previously served as Detroit’s passing game coordinator.
However, similarly to Wilson, I believe that Fields’ presence makes Hall’s outlook riskier in 2025. Hall saw inconsistent volume in the running game in 2024, and Fields could take even more of those carries if the Jets want to use him effectively. It’s not out of the realm of possibility for Fields to handle 8-11 rush attempts per game, something Rodgers never did. If this is the case, Hall could see fewer carries because of it.
Overall, I think that Justin Fields has a pretty solid supporting cast of playmakers at his disposal. New York should certainly still add a receiver in free agency or during the 2025 NFL Draft, especially after the departure of superstar wideout Davante Adams to the Los Angeles Rams.
However, while Wilson and Hall strengthen the fantasy outlook for Justin Fields in 2025, this new offense makes them riskier picks in 2025 fantasy drafts. They’re still on my board, but I would be hesitant to select them before the late second round in most leagues.
Predictions
I believe that Justin Fields will finish the 2025 fantasy season as a top-15 quarterback. He is extremely talented and has been given the keys to this franchise. He will excel as a rusher if the coaching staff develops the offense to his strengths, and if this is the case, Fields should have no problem becoming a fantasy star once again.
I think that Garrett Wilson will finish as a top-20 fantasy receiver with real upside to finish within the top 15 players at his position. This offense could very well operate through the run game, but even if it does, Wilson will still be the top target. There’s not much competition at the moment for volume for Wilson, so he should receive plenty of targets and receptions. If Fields improves as a passer, Wilson could end up having a career-best season.
Breece Hall is easily the riskiest of these three players relative to his ADP. The running back could see a decrease in rushing volume but will still have his receiving upside to fall back on. I think that he will finish in the top 20 at his position, but if Fields takes several carries per game, it’s hard to imagine Hall compiling a ton of yards on the ground. There is still a chance for Hall to break out, but Fields is definitely in competition for volume.
Overall, Fields is a low-risk, high-reward option in fantasy football during the 2025 NFL season. If everything goes according to plan, the Jets could even find themselves sneaking into the playoffs.
